Program Background 

Âé¶¹´«Ã½'s Summer Academic Workshop (SAW) is an all-cost covered, three-week program designed to equip incoming, first-year students with the tools to thrive at Âé¶¹´«Ã½. Students earn credit for one (1) English 100 writing course and half a credit (.5) for a School of Communication course. Students will live together in a campus residence hall and experience Âé¶¹´«Ã½ life under the mentorship of six-eight upper-class peer counselors. Students also participate in cultural and social co-curricular workshops and events curated by Student Enrichment Services. 

Dates of Internship: 04/28/2025 - 09/5/2025

  • There is flexibility to work remotely during 04/28/2025 - 08/04/2025 
  • Onsite support (housing and meals) will not be provided during 04/28/2025 - 08/04/2025   
  • Housing provided during 08/05/2025 – 09/02/2025 
    • For the remaining days of SAW 09/03/2025- 09/05/2025 SAW Student leaders will need to have their own housing. SES will assist with moving a limited number of belongings from SAW residence hall to a student’s academic year housing. More info will be shared leading up to training.  
  • Meals provided during 08/05/2025 – 09/05/2025 
  • Labor Day, 09/01/25, is considered a workday in this position 
  • End of Program Debrief will be facilitated after SAW is completed and date will be decided sometime during the SAW program 

Responsibilities

  • Senior SAW Counselor Orientation Part 1 & 2 
    • Co-create SAW Senior Counselor Orientation with SES Assistant Director and SAW Director 
    • Co- lead orientations on: 
      • Part 1: Week of April 28-May 2, Day and Time TBD 
      • Part 2: Week of May 19-23, Day and Time TBD 
  • SAW Counselor Interviews and Selection 
    • Participate in SAW Counselor Interview and Selection on: 
      • May 6- 8, Times TBD 
      • May 12-13, Times TBD 
  • Spring/Summer Hours for SAW Training and Program Development 
    • Meet 1:1 with Senior SAW Counselors on an agreed upon frequence 
    • Meet 1:1 with SES Assistant Director on an agreed upon frequence 
    • Meet with SAW Director 1:1 at least once over the summer 
    • Work closely with Assistant Director of Student Enrichment Services on the planning, logistics and execution of the SAW Student Leadership Training which includes Senior SAW Counselor Training and SAW Counselor Training. 
    • Attend SAW Program Meetings once a week starting the week of June 2-6. Day and Time TBD 
    • Participate in SAW Pre-Arrival Webinar for participants on Tuesday, July 15th, 7pm CST 
  • Senior SAW Counselor Training 
    • Co-Facilitate Senior SAW Counselor Training, Tues., August 5, 2025-Friday, August 8, 2025 
  • SAW Counselor Training 
    • Co-Facilitate SAW Counselor Training SES Assistant Director and Senior SAW Counselors, Sunday, August 10- Thursday, August 14 
  • Resident Director 
    • Serve as the live in Resident Director Tuesday, August 5, 2025-Tuesday, September 2, 2025 This includes evening hours and weekends. 
      • Be point person for SAW Student Leaders lock outs from Tuesday, August 5, 2025- Friday, August 15.  
      • Be on call for any emergencies that may arise and require immediate attention from Tuesday, August 5, 2025- Tuesday, September 2, 2025 
      • Agree upon a schedule for rounds from Tuesday, August 5, 2025- Tuesday, September 2, 2025  
    • Report directly to Associate Director of Student Enrichment Services for on-site emergent crisis
    • Work closely with Senior SAW Counselors to organize and manage the daily duty rotation from Saturday August 16, 2025, through Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
    • Work closely with SAW Student Leadership Team to manage social programming while students reside in Residence Hall.  
  • Student Supervision 
    • Provide supervision and direct support to up to two (2) Senior SAW Counselors and indirect support to six (6-8) SAW Counselors.  
    • Facilitate 1:1 meeting with Senior SAW Counselors 
    • Attend weekly SAW Check in Meetings with SAW Director, SES AD, and Senior SAW Counselors 
    • Co-Lead SAW Student Leadership Meetings during SAW 
  • SAW Program Development 
    • Attend weekly SAW program development meetings over the summer leading up to SAW 2024 
    • Support SAW Programming including but limited to: Welcome, Move In**, Kick Off, SES Workshops, and Closing 

**during move in there is a lot of physical labor (i.e. moving luggage in and out of cars, moving boxes into dorm rooms, etc.) if this a barrier please let the SAW team know 

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate student currently enrolled in a higher education/college student personnel or related program within the United States.  
  • Knowledgeable about the transition of first generation and lower income (FGLI) students to university.  
  • Familiarity with leadership development of students and developing community and sense of belonging among students.  
  • Background within working with undergraduate students in some capacity and utilization of conflict resolution skills, 
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of community and belonging.

Compensation

  • $20/hr between 5-20 hrs/week (04/28/2025 - 08/05/2025 
  • $4000 stipend pre-tax (08/05/2025 – 09/05/2025)  
    • This will be paid in installments of $800 pre-tax on: 8/22,9/5,9/4, 10/3,10/17
