NU-SHIP Cancellations due to Graduation/Withdrawal

The Â鶹´«Ã½ Student Health Insurance Plan (NU-SHIP) provides students with annual coverage, from September 1 through August 31, every year.

Fall 2024 & Winter 2025 Graduates

If you will graduate at the end of Fall or Winter quarter, you may request to terminate your NU-SHIP coverage. We are only able to process the graduation cancellation as of the end quarter in which you actually graduate. Graduation cancellations requests submitted after the applicable deadline(s) below will not be honored or processed.

Students must complete and submit the applicable form to our office by the relevant deadline date, to cancel their NU-SHIP enrollment. Please note that the Fall & Winter Graduation Cancellation Forms have been removed from the website, as the submission deadline has now passed. 

Subsequent to the applicable Fall or Winter graduation date, the Student Health Insurance office will verify that all students who submitted a cancellation request have a formal graduation status posted in CAESAR; students who do not officially graduate after submitting a cancellation request will have their NU-SHIP enrollment reinstated. 

Academic Withdrawals

Students who withdraw from their degree program at Â鶹´«Ã½ may request to terminate their NU-SHIP coverage. Please reach out to our office via email at student.insurance@northwestern.edu within 10 days of your withdrawal for processing. Please note we are unable to process the cancellation until your withdrawal is reflected in the student's record in CAESAR. Since the NU-SHIP coverage periods align with the academic calendar we can only process your cancellation at the end of the quarter in which the withdrawal takes place. Once we process the cancellation an adjustment will be posted to your student account for the remaining quarter(s) premium.

Please contact Student Financial Services for information regarding your NU-SHIP premium refund. Please note that the NU Student Health Insurance office does not issue refund checks.
