The Rink, a Black-owned skating rink founded by Carmen Clark and Nate Simpson in 1974, originally opened in Washington Heights. It quickly became a community staple and, as it grew in popularity, relocated to a larger space in Chatham.
The Rink, a Black-owned skating rink founded by Carmen Clark and Nate Simpson in 1974, originally opened in Washington Heights. It quickly became a community staple and, as it grew in popularity, relocated to a larger space in Chatham.
Skating has long been central to Black culture, from serving as a space for rest and community during the Civil Rights movement and later becoming a staple of Black pop culture in films like ATL and Roll Bounce.
