Extension Cord Fire

Summary

On February 10, 2025, an extension cord placed through an active doorway started a small fire because the cord sustained damage by repeated door use. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the fire was contained by a building occupant using a fire extinguisher.

Safety tips

Follow safe work practices and exercise caution when using extension cords to avoid injuries and the risk of fire:

  • Do not run extension cords through active doorways and windows, and do not nail or staple cords.
  • Avoid using extension cords whenever possible, and never use them for permanent wiring.
  • Make sure extension cords are appropriately rated and not overloaded or daisy chained.
  • Visually inspect extension cords for damage before use. Check for cracked, frayed, or burnt cords.
  • Keep all extension cords clear of water.
  • Use cable protectors or covers to protect extension cords and prevent trip hazards.
